Getting ready to go on vacation can be a very busy time. There are so many things to take care of and plan for before you leave for a week or two. Aside from booking the trip and packing, you’ll have to make sure things are fine back home while you’re gone. You’ll have to make sure there’s someone to check your mail, someone to take care of your pets, and maybe you’ll ask a neighbor to just keep an eye on the place while you’re gone.
It’s also important to make sure that your home’s plumbing system is prepared for your trip. Many insurance companies say that water damage is one of their most common and most expensive claims. When you’re not home to turn off the water, that’s when you’re most likely to have water damage associated with a plumbing leak.
It doesn’t take long to set the temperature for your water heater lower, so that it doesn’t accidentally boil away all the water and burn out the element. It’s also probably worth while to just turn off your water while you’re gone; that way if something unexpected happens, you won’t also have to deal with a massive water bill for wasted water. Do a quick check of any exposed pipes and connections just to make sure no new leaks have cropped up.
