We’ve written comparisons of different kinds of water heaters here before. You may have looked into tankless water heaters, or considered the merits of electric versus gas water heaters. But there’s another kind of water heater that you may not have heard of before. Heat pump water heaters can be an extremely efficient option.
They cost quite a bit more at purchase, but because they use 55% less energy than traditional electric water heaters, with tax credits they can pay for themselves in about three years.
A heat-pump water heater works like an air conditioner. It pulls heat out of the surrounding air, concentrating it and pumping it into the water tank. In a hot climate, they produce year round energy savings, but even here in the Ohio Valley, they can still be an efficient choice.
