Should I choose a gas or electric water heater?

When it comes to water heaters, there are more choices than ever. Newer technology like tankless (also known as "on demand”) water heaters as well as solar and hybrid units that weren’t available years ago provide more options for homeowners to consider when purchasing a new water heater.

Despite these advances in water heater technology, the most common decision our plumbing customers ask for advice about is whether to choose a gas or electric water heater.

With gas prices (including natural gas and propane) increasing steadily, many of our customers wonder if a gas water heater is still the more economical and cost-efficient choice. Despite those increasing gas prices, and improvements in the efficiency of electric water heaters, gas units are still the most economical choice, with the fastest recharge time.

There are obviously other factors to consider--if you don’t have gas service to your home, obviously you’ll need an electric unit.
