Valentine’s Day is infamous for being the day people go above and beyond celebrating their love for one another. Unfortunately, this day can sometimes cause emotional turmoil, heartbreak or the reevaluation of a relationship. But let’s be realistic: taking a new look at the relationship you’re in isn’t always a bad thing. And speaking of that… when was the last time you evaluated your relationship with your plumber?
Sometimes it’s all too easy to accept service that’s less than what you deserve. But if you’re seeing the following warning signs, it may be time to break up with your plumber and find someone worth your time.
1. You never know when he’s going to be there. Is your plumber constantly changing the times of day he’s working on your project? Is there endless variation on how long he stays to get just a portion of the job done? A professional, quality plumber is always prepared and committed, so there should never be a reason for his schedule to bounce around excessively or for you to be unsure just how long the project will take to complete. And if you’re working with a plumber who doesn’t show up when he’s scheduled or arrives hours late to the job, it may be time to move on.
2. He’s always talking problems, but never solutions. When you hire a plumber, you expect him to the be the expert. This means coming prepared to fix your plumbing issue quickly, efficiently and while keeping you in the loop. If your plumber consistently tells you he keeps running into problems that you’ve seen no symptoms of on your own, it may be time to find someone else before real damage is done. A skilled professional will assess your plumbing issue, make a diagnosis and get to work. If your plumber only talks about problems in your system with no real solutions in sight, he’s not the right guy for you.
3. He’s careless and irresponsible. Does your plumber look like a complete slob the moment he walks in? Does he track dirt and grime all over your floors, make a complete mess around the work area, and leave a disaster behind in the event he has to leave? Does he smell like alcohol or act in a way that makes you concerned about his state of mind? All of these are warning signs that you haven’t found the right plumber for you. Unfortunately, many unprofessional plumbers find this behavior acceptable. If your plumber is displaying any of this behavior, it’s time to end the relationship. And if he’s clearly been drinking before (or even on) the job, it may be best to report him to the Better Business Bureau to save other families from being in a bad relationship.
